The issue for both is that what was involved was never just ideology. 33 According to Jaskot too, buildings were designed with symbolic, ideological intent and this could be not only compromised or reshaped by the processes of production but, more importantly, was also a means of actually implementing policy with farreaching political-economic effects. 5 Map of Nazi Party Rally Grounds as planned. Large size relative to the human body was understood to impress and give the individual a sense of awe. 44 Such a violation played into a calculated Nazi ideology of dwarfing the individual, and subsuming individual identity to the collective project. 46 The massive dimensions of the marching grounds also allowed for a mass – though rigidly ordered – grouping of bodies, which was likewise intended to have emotional effects on both participants and viewers. As well as incorporating the individual body into the collective, this ‘body work’ was meant to generate emotions of Begeisterung and Faszination – a heady mix of enthusiasm, awe, fascination and excitement.

If some thought it good that I should be doing this research, others were disappointed in my choice of focus. That my husband and I had learnt German (something always commented upon as unusual, if not astonishing, for Engländer), participated in local events, made friends, visited all the places that people said we should visit, and sent our children to German schools, was regarded by many as a welcome affirmation that not everybody from England held the crude negative stereotypes of Germans that are peddled in some parts of the British media.
