Our primary interest in writing this book is to conduct a deep examination of the latest research so that we can gain a richer understanding of the developmental asset framework. It is unlikely, for example, that the assets included in the framework are the only “things” that youth need, and they might not even be the best . We know they are powerful, but our assump- Introduction tion is that the framework can always be improved. By examining the relation of the asset framework to other current research on adolescent development, this book clarifies the extent to which the asset model accurately describes what youth need and identifies areas in which it might be strengthened.
Supports experienced in infancy have a profound effect on resiliency experienced in adulthood. At the same time, Garmezy () demonstrated the importance to developmental outcomes of young people establishing a sense of their basic competence across their diverse ecologies—social competence in general, and specific competencies in dealing with their families, their schools, and their peers. Jessor () constructed an understanding of how adolescent risk behaviors that seemed distinct—delinquency, substance abuse, school failure, early sexual intercourse— actually clustered together; youth engaged in one of those risky behaviors were far more likely than other youth to be engaged in one or more of the other risky behaviors.
By the “right kinds” of support, we mean caring and love that are offered to a child regardless of her or his behavior, not only as a reward for “good” behavior. We mean unconditional love of the kind the psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner had in mind when he said that all children need someone in their lives who is simply “crazy” about them (Bronfenbrenner, ). To the extent that any child does not have that kind of support, he or she does not have the “right” kind. The research we review in this chapter makes it clear that too many youth in America fail to experience this kind of support.
