In 546 the Turks, aided by the Toba, rebelled against the Jujuan and defeated them. While some undoubtedly LAND AND HISTORY 5 remained in Mongolia, the majority fled west from Mongolia. On the western steppes, they dominated other tribes and were known in Europe as the Avars, a dominant force in eastern Europe until their defeat by Charlemagne in 790 and their final defeat in 800 by the new Bulgarian state. Turkic tribal confederations dominated Mongolia from the mid-sixth century until about 840.

Clear division arose from this. One of Dayan’s actions divided his realm into two parts, consisting of six tumens, with three in each part. These tumens, the Chahar, Urianghai, Khalkha, Ordos, Tumed, and Yungsiyebu, became the tribes of Mongolia. The head of the Chahar was recognized with the title of khan, but it was more of a first-among-equals title, as his brothers named themselves as his peers. Soon they all used the title of khan, thus relegating the title of khan to simply the title of one who led the Chahar (or any other) tumen.

Both sides used these, although the Qing had the edge in artillery. For several years, it was uncertain if the Khalkha had chosen the right side, as Galdan overran much of Khalkha territory in 1695, even to the Kerulen River. Ultimately, the Qing emerged victorious. Although Galdan was defeated and died in 1697 from suicide, poison, or illness,14 the Zungar threat was not completely removed. Ultimately, the Zungar were finally crushed in 1757, but during this process, the Qing gained Tibet and what is now known as Xinjiang.
