While large corpora are, without a doubt, essential when examining relatively infrequent words and the generality of its lexical use (Coxhead 2000), smaller corpora can also yield fruitful results depending on the aims of the research. Biber (1990), for example, shows how samples as small as 1,000 words are large enough to provide reliable results when focusing on grammatical items such as pronouns or tense. Small corpora are advantageous over large corpora especially when searching for high-frequency items as the amount of data the researcher has to work with is more manageable than the large quantities derived from multi-million word corpora.

Chapter 2. Contextualising age-related research One such area that stands to benefit from DA is a particular branch of sociolinguistics, that is, linguistic variation and change. While the basic elicitation tool in the collection of data consisted of the sociolinguistic interview method (Labov 1984; Milroy, L. 1987), more recent research into sociolinguistic variation has relied on capturing naturally-occurring spoken language in context (Stenström 1995; Holmes 1997; Andersen 2001). However, as in any study whose aim it is to illustrate sociolinguistic variation in naturally occurring language in context, a number of approaches to examining discourse must be called upon.

For example, definitions range from formalist and structuralist definitions to functionalist. The formalist or structuralist definitions claim that discourse is language above the sentence or above the clause (Hymes 1974). They focus primarily on the way different units function in relation to each other (Schiffrin 2000) and generally disregard the functional relations within the context of which discourse is a part (van Dijk 1984: 4). In contrast, the functionalist definitions are fundamentally concerned with language use stating that “the study of discourse is the study of any aspect of language use” (Fasold 1990: 65).
