In other words, there may never have been a purely goal-rational action, but rather all actions represent a mix of two or more of these four types. But this does not undermine the classification, since it is necessary - in order to understand action - to distil out the various component motivations, so that in our subsequent attempts to understand action we can assess them in the light of what we know to be the fundamental component motivations. There is another way in which these four types are out of key with concrete action, which is that we frequently act in a state of only semiawareness of our own motives.

Rewards, on the other hand, are accorded differentially on the grounds of performance.
