Example text

However, environmental archaeologists must not become so focused on the rigors of their discipline that they neglect the broader implications of their research. Balancing methodology and interpretation is difficult, but these case studies show that achieving this goal is possible and worth the effort. It is not the aim of these chapters to describe environmental materials or critique the ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY 17 biases and methodologies of environmental archaeology. Ample literature is available for studies traditionally encompassed within environmental archaeology and these are cited where appropriate.

Elite colonists in colonial New Mexico asserted their identity in part through the transfer and use of wheat, rather than the better-adapted indigenous maize (Zea mays) (Trigg 2004). Environmental historical archaeologists have until recently paid less attention to the consequences of colonization among non-European groups in the Americas than to those that affected the European newcomers. Studies oriented toward non-Europeans, however, have provided surprising insights. Assessments of Native American subsistence patterns in villages (Reitz 1991) and missions (Newsom 1987; Newsom and Quitmyer 1992; Reitz 1990, 1993; Ruhl 1990; Scarry 1993), for example, indicate that relatively little significant change can be documented in post-contact Native American subsistence as a consequence of European influence in the southeastern United States.

Much of the success of environmental archaeology in American historicperiod sites appears to depend on the identification of those aspects of globally relevant research questions that can be uniquely informed by the integration of environmental and behavioral information from documents, literary and artistic sources, plants, animals, artifacts, and soils. It has also depended on the development and incorporation of methodologies that explicitly recognize and incorporate the differences in human uses of the environment in the “modern” world of America from those of pre-Columbian societies.
