In 1887 she published the first version of her Souvenirs sur Gustave Flaubert (Paris: Ferroud, 1895) as the preface to the first edition of Flaubert's general correspondence. She calls him a fanatic who made art his God, but she suppresses much information about his sexual affairs. To her credit, she kept most of Flaubert's manuscripts intact. Like Emma with Rodolphe, Charles's mother loves her husband so slavishly for his good looks and dashing demeanor that he becomes disenchanted with her. By creating such unstated but obvious parallels in behavior among quite different people, as he will do throughout the novel, Flaubert implies that human beings possess a lim- Content 3 ited repertory of coping strategies, mostly ineffectual, just as they possess a limited vocabulary and capacity for self-expression in language. Thus he tacitly conveys his pessimism concerning the human condition.
