The marriage, sadly, did not end well for the TV series, which was canceled at the end of the 1996–7 season. The Superman comics often had to deal with the fact that adaptations of the character into other media were not always going to be particularly faithful, although occasionally, as with some of the characters created for the radio show, the changes were good enough to be incorporated back into the comics themselves. One such change came about, not as a well-thought-out addition to the mythos, but as a simple attempt at saving money.
Wheeler-Nicholson was inspired to get into the business by the success of Famous Funnies, a series that contained reprints of newspaper comic strips, and in 1934 formed National Allied Publications to publish New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1, which included comic strip reprints but also a number of original comics, mostly in the funny animal vein. The new venture was not a highly profitable one at the time, as retailers were wary about selling the new product that Wheeler-Nicholson was peddling.
However, in 1954, when psychiatrist Dr. Fredric Wertham began his campaign against comics with the publication of Seduction of the Innocent, which ultimately led to a congressional hearing about the effects comic books had among children, he made a point of stating that Batman and Robin’s relationship, living together alone in a mansion, appeared to be a homosexual one. Quickly, Kane and Moldoff (who was ghosting for Kane at the time) introduced Batwoman as a love interest for Batman and, a few years later, Bat- Girl as a love interest for Robin.
