19 Our starting point was huge quantities of textiles, excavated from the quarry’s rubbish dumps, and dated within approximately 50 years in the reigns of Emperors Trajan, Hadrian and Antoninus Pius. What to do with them? , along with details of provenience, layer, and the recording date. This went on for a while, enabling us to make statistic work-ups on the variety of fibers, or the frequency of tabby or twills. After several weeks of hard work, we realized that we had made only a small dent in the lot, and that it would take several years and a host of textile archaeologists to catalogue them all–and we would hardly be much wiser than we already were.
