The lexical and grammatical resources of the language system provide a number of structures with which to construct circumstantial functions in relation to processes and participants. Halliday (1994) identifies several circumstantial functions and their typical lexical and grammatical realizations. His list of the different classes of circumstantial functions represents a detailed set of distinctions for our purposes.

Qualitative adjectives contrast with classifying adjectives. Classifying adjectives, as the name implies, assign the things they modify to classes. Generally, they cannot be graded or used in superlative or comparative structures. We do not generally speak of "a very medical problem" or "a most medical problem," for example. A number of adjectives, however, can function as qualities or classifiers. With an adjective like religious in "He is a religious person," we would have to determine whether or not religious could be graded or used in the comparative or superlative structure to determine whether or not it is being used as a qualitative or classifying adjective.
