On other occasions, the variety of aims and interpretations is a grave weakness based not on error, or personal idiosyncrasy but upon ambiguous and inexplicit terminology, differing use of the same terms by different individuals. This latter symptom is the single most damaging characteristic, isolating archaeology in an undisciplined 20 Analytical Archaeology fever from the calm status of a coherent discipline. This kind of ailment is not unknown in the case-histories of developing disciplines and we shall pay some attention to possible remedies in a later section.

It follows that the prehistorian is always an archaeologist and prehistoric studies are always archaeological. Because archaeology contributes most heavily to our knowledge of societies without a written record, archaeology is often synonymous with prehistory and the archaeologist with the prehistorian, reflecting the common area Introduction and polemic 11 of the two sets. Consequently in this work we will frequently alternate the terms archaeology and prehistory, archaeologist and pre­ historian without implying any distinction other than that just noted.

This discussion brings us to the most interesting and exasperating class of malady - ‘ambiguity’. This ailment has two common forms, the use of one and the same term for differing sets of phenomena or the use of the same term for quite different levels of a hierarchy of sets. An example of the first kind of ambiguity is often concealed in the most dangerous of all archaeological terms, the label ‘typical’ or ‘type’. ‘Typical’ is sometimes used to denote the most common or frequent form of artefact within an assemblage - so that one might say that the handaxe is the ‘typical’ Acheulean artefact.
