Binary Numbers Circuits can be used to represent zeros or ones because they can take on two different states (such as on or off). Calculator (and computer) memory can be thought of as simply a large collection of zeros and ones. Zeros and ones also make up the binary, or base two, number system. For example, the (base ten) numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 are written in base two as 1, 10, 11, 100, respectively.
