Binary Numbers Circuits can be used to represent zeros or ones because they can take on two different states (such as on or off). Calculator (and computer) memory can be thought of as simply a large collection of zeros and ones. Zeros and ones also make up the binary, or base two, number system. For example, the (base ten) numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 are written in base two as 1, 10, 11, 100, respectively. Each memory circuit that can be used to represent a zero or one is called a binary digit, or bit. A collection of eight bits is called a byte (or a word).

In a non-RPN expression containing parentheses, some operators cannot be applied until after parenthesized subexpressions are first evaluated.
